Softball Recap: Gill St. Bernard's Takes a Loss

Gill St. Bernard's last matchup with Pope John XXIII could've gone either way, but unfortunately the same can't be said for the pair's match on Monday. The Knights came up short against Pope John XXIII, falling 9-2. If the Knights were looking for revenge after losing 7-5 to Pope John XXIII when the teams met back in May of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Gill St. Bernard's saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Isabella Mecca, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI. Charlotte Brown also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

This is the second loss in a row for Gill St. Bernard's and nudges their season record down to 6-3-1. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 6-3 Ridge (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 69% over those games). As for Pope John XXIII, they pushed their record up to 5-2 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season.

Looking ahead, Gill St. Bernard's will host Ridge at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Red Devil's pitching crew has only allowed 2.9 runs per game this season, so the Knights' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Pope John XXIII, they will head out to square off against Sparta at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Pope John XXIII are facing the Spartans at the right time seeing as the Spartans are stuck on a four-game losing streak.
