Baseball Recap: Eaton Comes Up Short

Eaton had lost five straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 5-14 to make it six. They lost 13-3 to the Waynesville Spartans. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Spartans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-5 on Monday.

Eaton saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Haydn Scott, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases. Scott is becoming a predictor of the Eagles' success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 2-1 (and 3-13 when he doesn't).

As for Waynesville, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 8-10. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win they have posted against Eaton since May 9, 2022.

On Waynesville's side, Jackson Garner made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over six innings pitched. Those six strikeouts gave Garner a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Harrison Byrd and Gregory Marlow did most of the damage at the plate: Byrd got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base, while Marlow went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Chase Kazmierski, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

Eaton and Waynesville could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. The Eagles will take on St. Henry at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with a big rank disadvantage (516 vs. 48). Meanwhile, Waynesville (ranked 447th) will meet Carlisle (ranked 165th) at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
