Southland is a perfect 6-0 against Mabel-Canton since May of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Rebels are taking a road trip to challenge the Cougars at 4:30 p.m. Southland will be looking to extend their current six-game winning streak.
Southland gave up the first runs on Thursday, but they didn't let that get them down. They came out on top against Grand Meadow/Kingsland/LeRoy-Ostrander by a score of 12-8.
Noah Goergen was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He pitched 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. Goergen was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, Beau Sathre was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. That triple was his first of the season. Austin Swenson was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three runs and two doubles.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Mabel-Canton challenged Spring Grove on Thursday. The Cougars won by a run and slipped past the Lions 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Cougars have posted since April 8th.
Like Southland, Mabel-Canton also got a great game from a two-way player: Nolan Garness. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing six innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits. Garness has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Milton Hutchinson, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one RBI. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.
Southland pushed their record up to 11-3 with the victory, which was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Mabel-Canton, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-9.
Mabel-Canton's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Southland has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .565. It's a different story for Mabel-Canton, though, as they've only averaged .345. Will they be able to contain Southland's hitters?
Southland took their win against Mabel-Canton in their previous meeting back in April by a conclusive 8-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Rebels since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
