Basketball Game Preview: Berthoud Spartans vs. Roosevelt Roughriders

Berthoud hasn't had much luck against Roosevelt recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Berthoud Spartans will take on the Roosevelt Roughriders at 7:00 p.m. Berthoud is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.5 points per game this season.

Berthoud is headed into Friday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Tuesday. They were three points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 77-74 heartbreaker at the hands of Thompson Valley. While losing is never fun, the Spartans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 250th, while the Eagles are ranked 124th).

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Wes Sullivan, who went 9 of 14 en route to 19 points and seven rebounds. Those 19 points gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ryan Callies, who went 5 for 10 on his way to 14 points.

Meanwhile, Roosevelt lost to Severance on the road by a 62-44 margin on Tuesday. The Roughriders have struggled against the Silver Knights recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive lost matchup.

Berthoud will have to contain Jack Cook as he made an impact in Roosevelt's last game. He went 6 of 15 en route to 18 points. Brooks Reckard was another key player, putting up eight points.

Roosevelt's loss dropped their record down to 7-5. As for Berthoud, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-9.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Berthoud has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 28.1 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Roosevelt struggles in that department as they've been averaging 27.5 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.

Berthoud was taken down by Roosevelt 66-34 in their previous meeting back in January of 2022. Can Berthoud avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
