Laurel Highlands recap Oct. 23, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Greater Johnstown, who took down 347th ranked Greater Johnstown, 14-6. Dan Lesney ran for 110 yards and caught one passes for nine yards in the win.
Forest Hills was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fifth in Laurel Highlands. Earlier in the week, the Rangers defeated Somerset 17-7.
Zaine Tomkowski put up the best numbers through the air as Bishop McCort lost to Cambria Heights. He finished with 12 completions for 150 yards and one touchdown. Tomkowski's favorite target this week was Luke DiFrancesco, who caught four passes for 77 yards.
Sam Curry was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 22 carries, he ran for 124 yards as Westmont Hilltop lost to Bishop Carroll. John Boyle also contributed to the rushing game with 34 yards on the ground.
Matt Shaffer provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Richland beat Penn Cambria. He completed 15 passes for 166 yards and also ran for 92 yards. Shaffer's favorite target this week was Kyle Flick, who caught six passes for 59 yards.
Gibson was the best wideout in the league this week as Greater Johnstown fell to the Huskies. Gibson racked up four receptions for 112 yards. Trey Andrews helped Greater Johnstown's passing attack out by catching two balls for 20 yards.
6-foot-1 quarterback Tomkowski of the Crushers is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1156. He has also thrown eight touchdowns. On the ground, the Rams' Tanner Solarczyk has rushed for 1237 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Flick. The Richland star has 32 catches for 568 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Eagles take on the Highlanders. Somerset is currently in fourth, while Cambria Heights is in third.
Richland extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Panthers, 30-12. The win marks eighth in a row for the Brandon Bailey's team.
