Football Recap: Inglewood Takes a Loss

Inglewood scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They and the Downey Vikings were almost perfectly matched up, but the Sentinels suffered a 21-20 defeat. The Sentinels were up 20-0 in the third quarter but couldn't hold on to the lead.

Despite the loss, Inglewood still got an impressive performance from Lincoln Jahn, who threw for 212 yards and two TDs while completing 77.3% of his passes, and also rushed for 63 yards and one touchdown on only six carries. Semaj Welch helped out on the ground, rushing for 91 yards.

While Inglewood came up short, they sure didn't make it easy for Downey: they limited their QB to completion percentage of just 48%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from three players: Noah Clark, Chase Wesley, and Iroc Cordova, who each logged one passes deflected. Given Jahn's standout performance, it's clear Downey's secondary just wasn't on the same level.

Inglewood didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Cordova and Clark. Cordova also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with seven. Another thorn in Downey's side was Sarrel Howard, who picked up three sacks and made nine total tackles (6.0 for loss).

Oscar Rios had another great game (as he tends to do), throwing for 199 yards and three touchdowns for Downey.

Inglewood's loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Downey, their record now sits at 4-1.

Inglewood wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 43-42 win against Midland on the 25th. As for Downey, they will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Mayfair at 7:00 p.m. on October 3. The Vikings will be up against the Monsoons' rather soft defense (which has allowed 34.6 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
