2016 CIF State Regional Football Championship Bowl Games announced

A rematch of one of the most watched games in California history will highlight the 2016 California Interscholastic Federation Bowl Game Championships, it was just announced.

St. John Bosco (Bellflower), No. 8 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Football Rankings presented by the Army National Guard, will take on two-time defending and seven-time state bowl champion De La Salle (Concord) in the Open Division championship game, Dec. 17 at Sacramento State University.

Bosco defeated De La Salle 20-14 in the coveted 2013 game at the Home Depot Center in Carson.

Bosco (12-2), coming off a 42-28 Southern Section Division I title win over third-ranked Mater Dei (Santa Ana) on Saturday, and De La Salle (11-1) were picked by the CIF commissioners as the top teams for the Southern and Northern parts of the state.

De La Salle (11-1) won its 25th consecutive North Coast Section title Friday with a 42-7 Open Division win over previously unbeaten Freedom (Oakley).

The 48 other qualifying teams in the south and north and their pairings were also just announced. Those 24 games — 12 in the north and 12 in the south — will be played Friday and Saturday, with those winners then squaring off for state bowl titles Dec. 16-17.
