The Southern Wayne Saints will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against the Smithfield-Selma Spartans at 7:30 p.m. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.
Southern Wayne struggled with three-point shooting accuracy on Thursday (Hunt was 42% better) and sadly the final score reflected it. Southern Wayne lost to Hunt on the road by a decisive 68-52 margin. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Southern Wayne has scored all season.
Despite the loss, Southern Wayne saw an underclassman step up: Jayden Hardy dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten rebounds. Hardy hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for four straight games. Another player making a difference was Kairel Evans, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds.
Meanwhile, Smithfield-Selma's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fourth straight loss. The match between Smithfield-Selma and West Johnston wasn't particularly close, with Smithfield-Selma falling 65-46. Smithfield-Selma has not had much luck with West Johnston recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.
Southern Wayne bumped their record down to 5-8 with that defeat, which was their third straight on the road. As for Smithfield-Selma, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-9 record this season.
Southern Wayne strolled past Smithfield-Selma in their previous meeting back in February of 2023 by a score of 58-44. Will Southern Wayne repeat their success, or does Smithfield-Selma have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
