Herscher and Prairie Central are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2017, but likely not for long. The Tigers will take on the Hawks at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Herscher is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
Herscher's pitching crew heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. They came out on top against Seneca by a score of 4-0. That's two games straight that the Tigers have won by exactly four runs.
The result came thanks to Cam Baker's shutout, as he gave up just five hits and racked up seven Ks. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Alec Nicholos was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Gaige Brown, who went 1-for-2 with one triple and one run.
Meanwhile, it was a Battle of the Birds when Prairie Central duked it out with Rantoul on Thursday. The Hawks narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Eagles 2-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Hawks have posted since March 27th.
Prairie Central's victory was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Lucas Steidinger, who went 1-for-3 with one run.
The win made it two in a row for Herscher and bumps their season record up to 14-3. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 4 runs in those games. As for Prairie Central, their win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-11.
Herscher's speedy runners might be the difference in Saturday's match. The Tigers have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Prairie Central, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Herscher continue to outrun the ball?
Everything went Herscher's way against Prairie Central in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Herscher made off with a 7-1 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Tigers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
