Even though the Athens Bulldogs have not done well against the Logan Chieftains recently (they were 0-5 in their previous five matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. Athens came out on top against Logan by a score of 49-38. Given Athens' advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 116th, while Logan is ranked 409th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Athens to victory were Asa Holcombe and Ella Chapman. Holcombe scored nine points along with eight rebounds and five steals, while Chapman scored 13 points along with five steals. Chapman is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Olivia Smart, who scored five points along with three steals.
Several Chieftains players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Dani Mahaffey, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds. The match was Mahaffey's fourth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Makenzie Daubenmire, who scored nine points along with five rebounds.
The win was the third in a row for Athens, bringing their record for this year to 4-2. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.0 points per game. As for Logan, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-5.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Athens will be home for the holidays to greet Meigs at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Meigs is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak. Logan will be home for the holidays to greet Reynoldsburg at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Reynoldsburg is looking to tack on another W to their four-game streak on the road.
