Smith Center extended the longest winning streak in Mid-Continent this week by beating Bennington, 22-16. The victory was the fourth in a row for the team.
Plainville took down Republic County 69-14 last week, the largest margin of any game. Trevor Axelson ran for 144 yards in the win.
Phillipsburg's dynamic duo of Sean Newlan and Seth Derr proved tough for Minneapolis to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Newlan threw for 109 yards and two touchdowns and Derr had 79 yards receiving. Tad Thompson helped Phillipsburg's passing attack out by catching two balls for 30 yards.
The Panthers' Newlan and Derr have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Newlan has thrown for 570 yards this season, while Derr, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 11 catches for 456 yards. The Cardinals' Axelson leads the league in rushing yards with 923.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Phillipsburg takes on second place Norton. Phillipsburg bested the Lions last week, while Norton fell to Beloit.
Plainville's Axelson is a mere 77 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Jb Covington's team takes on the Bluejays. The Panthers have allowed 75 points this season, while Norton has given up 151. Phillipsburg allowed 7 points last week as it beat Minneapolis.
Smith Center and the Bulldogs played the most hotly contested game in Mid-Continent this week, with Smith Center eventually emerging with a 22-16 victory. Kody Molzahn ran for 78 yards in the win.
