The North Mecklenburg Vikings will head out on the road to face off against the Grimsley Whirlies at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
North Mecklenburg fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back victories it seems like their luck might finally be changing. Everything went their way against West Charlotte on Friday as North Mecklenburg made off with a 34-8 win. The victory was all the more spectacular given North Mecklenburg's disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 82nd, while West Charlotte is ranked 20th).
North Mecklenburg got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Kelson Tate out in front who rushed for 32 yards and two touchdowns. Isaiah Mckee and his 86 yards on the ground were also a key factor in North Mecklenburg's win.
Meanwhile, Grimsley took their matchup on the road on Friday with ease, bagging a 49-6 win over Northern Guilford. The victory was just business as usual for Grimsley, who after ten games remain undefeated this season.
Grimsley relied on the efforts of Mitchell Summers, who rushed for 167 yards and a touchdown while picking up 9.8 yards per carry, and Faizon Brandon, who threw for 196 yards and five touchdowns. Summers hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Taylor, who gained 68 total yards and a touchdown.
Another reason for the win was Grimsley's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for seven sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Jalen Ashe and Jahkai Eason who racked up five sacks between them.
Their wins bumped North Mecklenburg to 5-5 and Grimsley to 10-0.
