The Byers Lions waltzed into their match on Thursday with six straight wins but they left with seven. They enjoyed a cozy 64-50 win over Falkner. Given Byers' advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 72nd, while Falkner is ranked 244th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Falkner lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Chris Nunley, who scored 23 points. That was a full 46% of Falkner's points, marking the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Elijah Mauney, who scored 15 points.
Byers is on a roll lately: they've won 16 of their last 18 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 21-4 record this season. As for Falkner, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-17.
Byers will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against Pine Grove at 8:00 p.m. on February 9th. Byers knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past three matches -- so hopefully Pine Grove likes a good challenge. As for Falkner, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Myrtle at 5:30 p.m. on February 9th. Hopefully Falkner focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Thursday.
