The Genoa-Hugo/Karval Pirates's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their fourth straight loss. They fell just short of Cheyenne Wells by a score of 43-40. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Genoa-Hugo/Karval in their matchups with Cheyenne Wells: they've now lost three in a row.
Several Pirates players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Chiara Pasquetti, who scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and three steals. That's the first time this season that Pasquetti pulled down eight or more rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Rylee Kelly, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Cheyenne Wells was led to victory by Paige Ryser and Izzy Trevino-Lopez. Ryser scored eight points along with ten rebounds and six steals, while Trevino-Lopez dropped a double-double on 11 points and ten rebounds. Trevino-Lopez has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last three times she's played. Evan Scheimer was another key contributor, scoring five points.
Genoa-Hugo/Karval's defeat was their fifth straight at home, which bumped their record down to 3-8. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 28.8 points per game. As for Cheyenne Wells, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 5-6.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Genoa-Hugo/Karval will stay at home for another game and welcome Bethune at 4:00 p.m. on January 26th. As for Cheyenne Wells, Cheyenne Wells and Greeley County will face off at 3:00 p.m. on January 23rd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday.
