Newport is 0-10 against Stayton since January of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Newport Cubs will head out on the road to face off against the Stayton Eagles at 5:30 p.m. Stayton took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Newport, who comes in off a win.
Newport can now show off seven landslide victories after their most recent matchup on Tuesday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Sweet Home 67-38 at home. Given Newport's advantage in MaxPreps' Oregon basketball rankings (they are ranked 53rd, while Sweet Home is ranked 200th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Meanwhile, things could have been worse for Stayton, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 62-47 loss to Cascade on Tuesday. Stayton has not had much luck with Cascade recently, as the team's come up short the last four times they've met.
Stayton's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Ethan Whieldon, who scored nine points along with two steals, and Kaden Holm who scored ten points along with two steals. That's the first time this season that Holm grabbed two or more steals.
Stayton struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Newport pushed their record up to 9-4 with that win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.0 points per game. As for Stayton, their loss dropped their record down to 7-7.
Newport took a serious blow against Stayton in their previous matchup back in February of 2023, falling 65-25. Can Newport avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
