Led by junior Kristen Korzevinski's double-double, 14 points and 11 rebounds, the
Holy Trinity (Hicksville, N.Y.) Titans defeated Sacred Heart Academy 60-43 at Holy Trinity High School. With the win, Holy Trinity improved to 14-4 overall, 6-3 in NSCHSAA play. Katie Poppe added 15 points for the Titans.
The Titans have won 12 straight games since Korzevinski took over at point guard. "Since I've been playing the point, it's a great feeling to finally have everyone play up to their full potential and having everyone on the team get involved." Korzevinski said. "Everyone just needs to stay focused, work hard, play as a team, and we should have no problem winning the championship."
The Titans jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, but back came the Spartans. Sacred Heart responded with 8-0 run to take a two point lead at 12-10. Holy Trinity led 13-12 as the first quarter came to a close.
The teams spent the second quarter trading buckets. Holy Trinity sophomore Kelly Carey gave the Titans some breathing room when she hit a three at the buzzer. Holy Trinity had a narrow 28-24 lead at the break.
Holy Trinity coach John Lapani made some adjustments at halftime which led to the Titans breaking the game open. "We weren't playing our game," Lapani said. "Our weak side defense wasn't there and we weren't locking them down. As far as the offense went, we were playing too much one on one. In the second half, our defense was a lot better and we started playing as a team. To win 12 in a row, I don't care what sport you play is a great accomplishment. We are really proud of ourselves especially the way we started at 2-4. We are real excited, and there is a lot of confidence in the locker room."
Holy Trinity went on an 11-0 run to open the third quarter to jump out to a 46-30 lead, and never looked back. In the fourth, the Titans were able to hold on and seal the game at the foul line .
Poppe led the Titans in the second half with eight points. "It feels great to win 12 in a row," Poppe said. "It's a huge accomplishment. During the win streak, we've been playing hard every second of every game," Poppe said. "We play every game like we have something to prove and are playing great together."
