After losing to Galena Park the last time they met, Sterling decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Sterling Raiders pulled ahead with a 40-39 photo finish over the Galena Park Yellowjackets on Friday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Raiders.
Leading Sterling to victory were Destiny Lewis and Madison Morrow. Lewis went 7 for 14 on her way to 18 points in addition to six boards and five assists, while Morrow posted six points in addition to 14 boards and four blocks. That makes it four consecutive games in which Lewis has scored at least a third of Sterling's points.
Several Yellowjackets players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Rebecca Torres, who put up nine points and eight rebounds. That's the most rebounds Torres has posted since back in November of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Cailin Fountain, who had 12 points and three steals.
Sterling has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a massive bump to their 10-12 record this season. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 27.6 points per game. As for Galena Park, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 11-10 record this season.
Sterling will face off against Westbury at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Galena Park, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 52-25 victory against Milby on the 13th.
