The Calexico Bulldogs will head out on the road to challenge the Chula Vista Spartans at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Calexico is coming into the game hot, having won their last six games.
Calexico's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Saturday. They blew past Imperial 7-0.
David Lara tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out eight over five innings pitched.
On the hitting side, Jose Ortega was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Ander Garcia, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Chula Vista was not the first on the board on Saturday, but they got there more often. They came out on top against Foothills Christian by a score of 6-3 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). The Spartans' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Pablo Alvarado made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Alvarado was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other pitching news, Chula Vista got a great performance from Jorge Lopez as he pitched five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Gabriel Mendoza, who went 3-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. Jose De La Cruz also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Chula Vista kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Calexico's record now sits at 6-2. As for Chula Vista, their record now sits at 2-3-1.
Calexico took their victory against Chula Vista in their previous matchup back in April of 2022 by a conclusive 9-3. Does Calexico have another victory up their sleeve, or will Chula Vista turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
