Mars and New Castle are an even 3-3 against one another since April of 2023, but likely not for long. The Fightin' Planets will head out to challenge the Hurricanes at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Mars has given up an average of 11.2 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Mars is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 16 runs on Wednesday, they were much more limited against North Hills on Friday. They lost 15-0 to the Indians. The Fightin' Planets haven't had much luck with the Indians recently, as the team has come up short the last nine times they've met.
Meanwhile, New Castle put another one in the bag on Wednesday to keep their perfect season alive. They came out on top against North Hills by a score of 5-2. The five-run effort marked the Hurricanes' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
Zoie Shields spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Mikayla Digennaro and Angie Gallo did most of the damage at the plate: Digennaro went 1-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and one stolen base, while Gallo went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. That home run marked the first that Gallo has launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Aliyah Stalcynski, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.
Mars' defeat dropped their record down to 1-4. As for New Castle, their win bumped their record up to 5-0.
Monday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Mars hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .313. However, it's not like New Castle struggles in that department as they've averaged .462. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Mars suffered a grim 15-0 defeat to New Castle when the teams last played back in April of 2025. Can the Fightin' Planets avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
