The Washington Patriots will take on the Steilacoom Sentinels at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Washington is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.
Washington is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Franklin Pierce just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell 7-3 to the Cardinals.
Washington saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Zoe Garcia-Zamora, who went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, after only one run in their last match, Steilacoom made sure to put some runs up on the board against Clover Park on Tuesday. The Sentinels were the clear victors by a 25-1 margin over the Timberwolves. The victory was some much needed relief for the Sentinels as it spelled an end to their four-game losing streak.
Makayla Downey was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with seven RBI. Those four hits gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Harper Runn, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with four runs, three RBI, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Izzy Cortez was another key player, going 2-for-4 with five runs and one RBI.
Steilacoom's win bumped their record up to 3-14. As for Washington, their loss dropped their record down to 9-5.
Steilacoom's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Washington has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.8 hits per game. It's a different story for Steilacoom, though, as they've been averaging 11.4 hits. Given Washington's sizable advantage in that area, the Sentinels will need to find a way to close that gap.
Washington took their victory against Steilacoom when the teams last played back in March by a conclusive 11-2 score. Do the Patriots have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Sentinels turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
