Vero Beach extended their winning streak to eight on Friday, bumping them up to 8-0. They really took it to the Pahokee Blue Devils for the full four quarters, racking up a 53-14 win. The Indians' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.
Efrem White was his usual excellent self, rushing for 116 yards and one TD on only 14 carries, while also throwing for 271 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His longest rush was for an impressive 59 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Jonathan Hillsman was in the mix as well, providing Vero Beach with two scores.
Vero Beach didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Pahokee to a completion percentage of just 45.5%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from four players: Jaydon Haywood, Lance Stone, Jarvis Jacobs, and Jamarion Hillsman, who each logged one passes deflected. Vero Beach wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 64.3%.
Vero Beach's defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for four sacks. That dominant display was truly a team effort as four different players picked up one apiece. They got some further help from Haywood: he picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made four total tackles (1.5 for loss).
As for Pahokee, the defeat snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 6-2 record. While losing is never fun, they can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 76th, while Vero Beach is ranked tenth).
When it comes to explaining why Pahokee lost, don't look at Xavier Mitchell. Despite the final result, he threw for 164 yards and a pair of TDs.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Vero Beach will venture away from home to challenge Treasure Coast at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Pahokee, they will head out to take on Legacy at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
