3A Region 1 recap Oct. 3, 2012
T.R. Miller extended the longest winning streak in 3A Region 1 this week by beating Clarke County, 19-7. This was the team's sixth consecutive win.
W.S. Neal moved up to 155 from 193 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 38-17 win over Hillcrest helped the Eagles improve their standing.
Excel's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. James Hudson threw for 128 and three touchdowns and Joe Crutchfield had 51 yards receiving. On the ground Dekota Welker chipped in 144 yards. Montrell Hands helped Excel's passing attack out by catching one ball for 28 yards.
5-foot-11 quarterback Chase Short of Straughn is the league leader in passing yards this season with 323. He has also thrown four touchdowns. On the ground, the Panthers' Welker has rushed for 522 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Crutchfield. The Excel star has eight catches for 119 yards.
A big matchup in 3A Region 1 this week will be when Bayside Academy takes on the Tigers. As it stands, the Admirals are in fifth, while Straughn is in third.
W.S. Neal led the league in scoring this week after putting up 38 points on the Jaguars.
