The St. Mary's Knights are taking a road trip to challenge the Cactus Shadows Falcons at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. St. Mary's is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
St. Mary's got their first taste of in-conference action on Thursday and they started things off strong. They had just enough and edged out Mesquite 7-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Knights have posted since April 15, 2024.
Camilla Marquez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits.
At the plate, Ava Sierras was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Izzy Nunez, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Cactus Shadows had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.6 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Thursday. They came out on top against the Padres by a score of 5-1.
Cactus Shadows also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Megan Hughes gave up only one earned run on six hits. Hughes has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 13 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Ashlyn Cundall, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Olivia Fossey was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one triple and one run.
Cactus Shadows was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Marcos de Niza only posted a batting average of .214.
St. Mary's record now sits at 10-11. As for Cactus Shadows, their record is now 16-9.
St. Mary's speedy runners might be the difference in Monday's contest. The Knights have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.4 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Cactus Shadows, though, as they've been averaging only 1.2 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will St. Mary's continue to outrun the ball?
St. Mary's suffered a grim 16-7 defeat to Cactus Shadows in their previous matchup back in April of 2018. Can the Knights avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
