Guyer (Denton, Texas) saw its 17-point lead dwindle to 10, but still managed to hang on and defeat
Birdville (North Richland Hills, Texas) 52-42 on Saturday.
After taking the lead on a
Luke Bush touchdown run in the first quarter, the Wildcats led 31-21 at the half.
Guyer expanded its lead to 17 points entering the fourth quarter. GHS's lone score in the quarter came on a touchdown pass by
Logan Helal to
Ian Kies.
Helal dashed for two rushing touchdowns during the Denton school's triumph.
Helal was the top performer for the Wildcats. The junior wide receiver threw three touchdowns.
Justin Martin made a difference for the Hawks. The senior quarterback threw three touchdowns. He has now scored 11 touchdowns on the season.
Birdville came in surrendering 13.9 points per game this season.
The defeat comes as a step back for Birdville, which notched a 42-21 victory over Monterey in its previous outing.
