In what's become a running theme this season, the Southwest Roughriders gave their fans yet another huge victory on Tuesday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Wallace 62-27 on the road. Given Southwest's advantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 99th, while Wallace is ranked 210th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Southwest found their leader in underclassman Anikka Nelms, who scored 19 points along with three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Nelms has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Allison Vanpelt, who scored nine points along with five assists and four steals.
When it comes to explaining why Wallace lost, one person who can't be blamed is Kendyl Flaming. Despite the final result, she scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. Another player making a difference was Reagan Finley, who scored five points.
Southwest's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-7. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.0 points per game. As for Wallace, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-13.
Southwest will head out on the road to face off against Axtell on Friday. Southwest is facing Axtell at the right time seeing as Axtell is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Wallace, they will head out on the road to face off against Hitchcock County at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Wallace focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 37 on Tuesday.
