Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to rack up 11 more assists than your opponent, a fact the Peyton Panthers proved on Friday. They took down Rocky Ford 64-46. Given Peyton's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 106th, while Rocky Ford is ranked 308th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Peyton got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Bryce Love out in front who almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine rebounds. It was the first time this season that Love scored 15 or more points. Trent Gregg was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Several Meloneers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Fabian Ortega, who scored 11 points along with three steals. Another player making a difference was Isaiah Vazquez-Gallegos, who scored 19 points.
The victory makes it two in a row for Peyton and bumps their season record up to 10-6. As for Rocky Ford, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-14.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Peyton will take on Dolores Huerta Prep at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Dolores Huerta Prep has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games. As for Rocky Ford, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Swallows Charter Academy at 4:00 p.m. Rocky Ford is coming into the match with 13 straight losses at home, so Swallows Charter Academy is out to stop a squad with plenty of momentum.
