Purvis (Miss.) kept up a steady attack all game long to beat
North Pike (Summit, Miss.), 28-6, on Saturday.
The Tornadoes were up 14-0 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown run by
Thomaz Taylor in the second quarter.
Purvis expanded its lead to 21 points entering the fourth quarter. PHS scored once in the quarter on a
Dj Pierce touchdown run.
Nathan Roseberry was the top performer for the Tornadoes. The sophomore quarterback threw one touchdown and ran for one touchdown. He has now scored three touchdowns on the season.
Austin Smith made a difference for the Jaguars. The junior quarterback threw one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to two on the year.
North Pike's lone touchdown came on a 60-yard pass from Smith to
Jalen Jackson in the fourth quarter.
Coming into the game Purvis had allowed 21.5 points per game this year. PHS held firm on the defensive front, and kept NP below the 10.2 points it had been averaging per game.
When the two teams played each other last season, the Tornadoes came away with a 26-19 victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for North Pike, which notched a 10-7 victory over Lawrence County in its previous outing. The victory was a step in the right direction for Purvis, which was coming off a 19-14 defeat at the hands of Columbia in its previous game. The loss snapped the Summit school's 3-game winning streak.
Purvis (4-3) will play a 4A Region 7 game against Tylertown next week, while North Pike (3-4) will take on Columbia also in a 4A Region 7 game.
