Navajo Prep has gone 8-2 against Zuni recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Eagles will head out on the road to square off against the Thunderbirds at 4:00 p.m. Navajo Prep knows how to get runs on the board -- the squad has finished with ten runs or more in their past six matchups -- so hopefully Zuni likes a good challenge.
It was a Battle of the Birds when Navajo Prep challenged Thoreau on Tuesday. The Eagles blew past the Hawks 17-2. Considering the Eagles have won ten contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Shianne Begay made a big impact no matter where she played. She tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kira Begay, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Amia Salazar was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Navajo Prep was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .545. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .321 or higher in 12 consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Zuni came into Tuesday's matchup having lost nine straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They had just enough and edged out Newcomb 14-12. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Thunderbirds have posted since April 23, 2024.
Zuni got a massive performance out of Kiaura Kallestewa, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and four runs. Those four runs gave Kallestewa a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Malaya Quam, who went 3-for-5 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Navajo Prep is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 21.1 runs over those games. As for Zuni, their win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-7 and their overall record up to 5-16.
Navajo Prep took their victory against Zuni when the teams last played back in March by a conclusive 18-7 score. Will the Eagles repeat their success, or do the Thunderbirds have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
