Harlingen South is 3-0 against Lopez since October of 2014, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Harlingen South Hawks will head out on the road to face off against the Lopez Lobos at 7:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Harlingen South has five straight wins, Lopez has six straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Two weeks ago, Harlingen South got themselves on the board against Donna North, but Donna North never followed suit. They blew past the Chiefs 64-0 at home. The result was nothing new for Harlingen South, who have now won three matches by 30 points or more so far this season.
Among those leading the charge was David Sanchez, who rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns. David Kirksey was in the mix as well, providing Harlingen South with two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Lopez pushed their score all the way to 44 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell to Donna North 49-44. Lopez gained 111 more yards on the day, but it was Donna North that made the best of use of them.
Despite the loss, Lopez got a solid performance out of Eddie Slovak, who rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 8.2 yards per carry, and also picked up 35 receiving yards. Another player making a difference was gabriel rios, who picked up 262 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Harlingen South's win was their fourth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 5-2. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 36.5 points per game. Lopez has traveled a rocky road this season, as they've lost seven of their first eight matchups, which leaves them at a 1-7 record this season.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Harlingen South has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 243.9 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Lopez struggles in that department as they've been averaging 155.1 per game. It's looking like Friday's contest might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Everything came up roses for Harlingen South against Lopez when the teams last played back in October of 2022 as the team secured a 71-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Harlingen South since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
