St. Vincent de Paul and Piner are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2022, but likely not for long. The Mustangs will head out to challenge the Prospectors at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. St. Vincent de Paul is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.
St. Vincent de Paul couldn't beat Ukiah on Wednesday even though they stacked four runs on them in the sixth inning. The Mustangs fell 8-5 to the Wildcats.
Makayla Bignardi spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and three unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up seven Ks.
At the plate, St. Vincent de Paul saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Johana Stone, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Piner got the win against Elsie Allen on Monday by a conclusive 15-1. The Prospectors might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten games by seven runs or more this season.
Cambria Weerts was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.2 strikeouts per game. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Genavieve De Mauro, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two triples, four RBI, and two runs. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Elliana Tabares, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Piner kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.9 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matches they've averaged 10.6.
Piner has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 11-9 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for St. Vincent de Paul, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-6.
Friday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. St. Vincent de Paul has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .458. However, it's not like Piner struggles in that department as they've averaged .469. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
St. Vincent de Paul might still be hurting after the 7-0 loss they got from Piner in their previous matchup back in April. Can the Mustangs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
