If the Maple Valley Lions were riding high off their 74-39 takedown of the Kellogg Panthers last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Maple Valley took a 58-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of Union City on Friday. Maple Valley has not had much luck with Union City recently, as the team's come up short the last two times they've met.
Maple Valley's loss came despite strong showings from Ayden Wilkes and Teegen McDonald. Wilkes scored 16 points along with five rebounds and four steals, while McDonald scored 12 points along with three steals. Wilkes hasn't dropped below 15 points for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Jake McDonald, who scored ten points.
Rick Austin was his usual excellent self, almost dropping a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds for Union City. Jeremy Zehr was another key contributor, scoring 15 points.
Maple Valley has been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last 11 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-9 record this season. As for Union City, their win bumped their record up to 9-7.
Maple Valley will head out on the road to square off against Lakewood at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Union City is on the road again on Tuesday and plays Kalamazoo Christian at 7:00 p.m. on February 6th. Kalamazoo Christian is coming into the game with four straight wins at home, so Union City is out to stop a team with plenty of momentum.
