The Pomeroy Pirates will take on the Wahkiakum Mules at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Pomeroy is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Saturday. They really took it to Tulalip Heritage for the full four quarters, racking up an 86-22 victory. With the Pirates ahead 68-8 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Kyzer Herres produced another solid effort rushing for 247 yards and six scores while picking up 13.0 yards per carry. Another back making a difference was Wyatt Huwe, who rushed for 113 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Pomeroy was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 554 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since the start of last season.
Meanwhile, Wahkiakum faced Moses Lake Christian Academy/Covenant Christian in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Mules blew past the Lions, posting a 78-38 win. The victory was just business as usual for the Mules, who after ten games remain undefeated this season.
The match pitted two dominant signal callers against one another in Jayden Stoddard and Johnny Ferguson. Stoddard had a great game and rushed for 224 yards and four TDs on only ten carries. Meanwhile, Ferguson was balling out in the loss, rushing for 104 yards and four scores, while also throwing for 133 yards on eight of 13 attempts.
On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Wahkiakum's defensive line and their three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Gage Robinson, Cameron Mendez, and Israel Velke, who each picked up one sack apiece.
Pomeroy's record is now 10-1. As for Wahkiakum, their record now sits at 10-0.
Saturday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Pomeroy has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 277.9 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Wahkiakum struggles in that department as they've been averaging 209.4 rushing yards. There's a good chance Saturday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
