The Lafayette Rams entered their tilt with the Phoebus Phantoms with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Lafayette snuck past Phoebus with a 64-60 win on Saturday. Given Lafayette's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 40th, while Phoebus is ranked 271st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Jarquez Garrett, who scored 26 points along with six assists and five rebounds. The matchup was his seventh in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Shamar Welsh, who scored 14 points.
Lafayette's win bumped their record up to 6-1. As for Phoebus, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-6.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Lafayette will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Poquoson at 7:00 p.m. on January 3, 2024. Poquoson is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'. Phoebus will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Gloucester at 7:00 p.m. on January 2, 2024. Gloucester is hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses.
