Baseball Game Preview: Clover Hill Cavaliers vs. Powhatan Indians

Clover Hill and Powhatan are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2018, but likely not for long. The Cavaliers will head out to square off against the Indians at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Clover Hill is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.

Clover Hill will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs last Wednesday, then bounced right back against L.C. Bird on Wednesday. The Cavaliers blew past the Skyhawks 15-3. The win continues a trend for the Cavaliers in their matchups with the Skyhawks: they've now won four in a row.

Clover Hill got a massive performance out of Carter Burcume, who scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Burcume is becoming a predictor of the Cavaliers' success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 1-2 when he doesn't). Carter Hine was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing three bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Clover Hill was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .391. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Meanwhile, Powhatan fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against James River Midlothian on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Rapids by a score of 7-5. The defeat continues a trend for the Indians in their meetings with the Rapids: they've now lost six in a row.

Powhatan's loss dropped their record down to 4-3. As for Clover Hill, their victory bumped their record up to 4-2.

Clover Hill skirted past Powhatan 2-0 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Will the Cavaliers repeat their success, or do the Indians have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
