Baseball Game Preview: Cape Coral Seahawks vs. Gateway Eagles

After both having extra time off, the Cape Coral Seahawks and the Gateway Eagles will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field one another at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Cape Coral has given up an average of 7.8 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.

Cape Coral fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against South Fort Myers last Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Wolfpack by a score of 11-10. The defeat continues a trend for the Seahawks in their meetings with the Wolfpack: they've now lost seven in a row.

Carter Heisler made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. Cape Coral is 4-2 when Heisler posts two or more runs, but 1-7 otherwise. Derek Hooker was another key player, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his six plate appearances.

Meanwhile, while Gateway put up some runs last Thursday, the same can't be said for Lehigh. Gateway blew past Lehigh 8-0. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten contests by six runs or more this season.

Lehigh's batters probably weren't too happy with Hunter Squire, who pitched a no hitter and racked up 16 Ks (he gave up two walks). Those 16 strikeouts gave Squire a new career-high.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Devyn Vitiello, who scored a run and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-2. The team also got some help courtesy of Juan Carlos Lineras, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Gateway has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. Cape Coral's loss dropped their record down to 5-9.

Cape Coral came out on top in a nail-biter against Gateway in their previous meeting last Monday, sneaking past 6-5. Does Cape Coral have another victory up their sleeve, or will Gateway turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
