Schalmont and Catholic Central are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2018, but not for long. The Schalmont Sabres will head out on the road to face off against the Catholic Central Crusaders at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Schalmont will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps New York Rankings (they are ranked 175th, while Catholic Central is ranked fifth).
It's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 73-44, which was the final score in Schalmont's tilt against Lansingburgh on Tuesday. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Schalmont has scored all season.
Meanwhile, Catholic Central had already won 17 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 27.1 points), and they went ahead and made it 18 on Friday. They claimed a resounding 84-52 victory over La Salle Institute on the road. Catholic Central has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 14 matchups by 20 points or more this season.
It was another big night for Darien Moore, who almost dropped a double-double on 28 points and nine rebounds. He is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 16 or more in the last 14 games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Qwameik Smith, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for Schalmont and nudges their season record down to 10-9. As for Catholic Central, they pushed their record up to 18-1 with that victory, which was their eighth straight on the road.
Schalmont suffered a grim 71-51 defeat to Catholic Central when the teams last played back in December of 2023. Can Schalmont avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
