Basketball Recap: Traevon Hayes and Mason Brown Secure Win for South Granville

South Granville won the last time they faced Carrboro and things went their way on Wednesday too. The South Granville Vikings secured a 77-71 W over the Carrboro Jaguars. Given the Vikings' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 143rd, while the Jaguars are ranked 315th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Leading South Granville to victory were Mason Brown and Traevon Hayes. Brown dropped a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Hayes went 7-for-12 on his way to 16 points in addition to eight boards and seven assists. The dominant performance also gave Hayes a new career-high in blocks (three). KJ Terry was another key player, putting up 15 points and seven rebounds.

South Granville smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Carrboro only pulled down two offensive boards.

Carrboro lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Sam Kanjorski, who went 6-for-9 from beyond the arc to rack up 26 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Bakari Watkins, who posted 17 points along with six boards and five assists.

South Granville is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 18-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 74.0 points over those games. As for Carrboro, their loss dropped their record down to 10-12.

The future could be bright for both South Granville and Carrboro: their next opponents haven't had the best luck recently. South Granville will try to hand Granville Central their eighth-straight defeat when the two meet at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Carrboro will look to extend Durham School of the Arts' four-game losing streak when the meet at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
