After a string of 11 wins, the Munster Mustangs's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They suffered a tough 73-47 defeat at the hands of Rensselaer Central. Munster was down 58-35 at the end of the third quarter, and things only got worse from there.
When it comes to explaining why Munster lost, one person who can't be blamed is Gracyn Gilliard. Despite the final result, she scored 26 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Gilliard is crushing the point category: she's posted at least 17 every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Igboamaka Odeluga, who scored four points along with five rebounds.
Rensselaer Central's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Taylor Van meter led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on 24 points and nine rebounds. Van meter is trending in the right direction, as she's improved her point production for three games straight. Another player making a difference was Carly Drone, who scored 14 points along with two steals.
Munster's loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 18-4. As for Rensselaer Central, they pushed their record up to 22-1 with that win, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season.
Munster and the Indians will face off at 5:30 p.m. on January 30th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Lake Central will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. As for Rensselaer Central, they will square off against the Red Devils at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
