Baseball Recap: Benjamin Franklin Wins Going Away Against Tonopah Valley

Benjamin Franklin won the last time they faced Tonopah Valley and things went their way on Thursday too. The Chargers blew past the Phoenix 12-2. The result was nothing new for the Chargers, who have now won six games by six runs or more so far this season.

Talan Speir was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits (and only one walk). Those 11 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Benjamin Franklin's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 6-8-1 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jono Wilcox, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Another player making a difference was Owen Fierstein, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

Benjamin Franklin always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .581. They are 4-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Benjamin Franklin's win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 10-9-1. As for Tonopah Valley, they dropped their record down to 9-9-1 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Benjamin Franklin will welcome San Tan Foothills at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Tonopah Valley, they will take on Parker at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday. The Broncs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.33 runs per game on average), something the Phoenix will no doubt try to take advantage of.
