Softball Recap: Somerville Wins Going Away Against Rice Consolidated

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Woodsboro, Somerville was happy to have turned things around on Saturday. They blew past the Rice Consolidated Raiders 13-2. The Yeguas might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four contests by seven runs or more this season.

Rhyan Ricci was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances. Those two runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Somerville let Aubrey Kovasovic and Kylie Jo Neuendorff run wild. Kovasovic scored two runs while going 1-for-3, while Neuendorff went 2-for-3 with two RBI. That's the most runs Kovasovic has posted over her last 11 matchups. Another player making a difference was Emma Williams, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Somerville was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Somerville is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games. Rice Consolidated is on a 37-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-11.

Looking ahead, Somerville will square off against Schulenburg at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday. Schulenburg has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.33 runs per game on average), something Somerville will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Rice Consolidated, they will face off against Luling at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
