Basketball Recap: Graham Matlock's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Rivermont Collegiate over Quad Cities Christian

Rivermont Collegiate was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They took a 62-52 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Quad Cities Christian Eagles. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Eagles this season, with their most recent loss being a 72-52 defeat back in January.

Several Lions players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Graham Matlock, who went 8-for-16 on his way to 16 points along with eight rebounds and six assists. Those six assists gave Matlock a new career-high. Eamon Matlock was another key player, dropping a double-double with 14 points and 13 boards.

Even though they lost, Rivermont Collegiate smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in nine consecutive contests.

Quad Cities Christian's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tanner Garant led the charge by going 8-for-20 to rack up 19 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals. Garant is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last six games he's played. Another player making a difference was Alijah Zentic, who posted 17 points and seven boards.

Rivermont Collegiate's loss dropped their record down to 4-7. As for Quad Cities Christian, the win (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 20-5.

Rivermont Collegiate has already played their next game (against Hillcrest Academy), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Quad Cities Christian will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Tournament Opponent at 3:00 p.m. on February 21st.
