Perhaps no position has seen more change over the past decade than running back, where recruits previously thought to be undersized or even too big were moved to a different position even if they had the numbers and speed to play at the next level. Now however, with spread offenses and pro-style sets each requiring something different, every running back brings a unique set of attributes to the table.
Look no further than
Tom Lemming's recently released Top 100 for 2013 list. Top tailback,
Joliet Catholic Academy (Ill.) recruit
Ty Isaac, is a 6-foot-2, 215-pound bruiser who has left an impression despite splitting time with other FBS-bound backs and put up eye-popping numbers while doing so.
Aloha (Beaverton, Ore.) running back
Thomas Tyner should fit right into Oregon's offense as one of the fastest players in the country regardless of position. Each plays the game in a slightly different way but there's no denying that they've earned their five-star status when you put on the film. While Tyner is already committed, expect Issac to pick between Auburn, Michigan, Notre Dame and USC after taking several more visits over the coming months.
Just outside of the top 10 is Florida commit and record-setting
Glades Day (Belle Glade, Fla.) running back
Kelvin Taylor. The son of Gators great Fred Taylor, the 5-foot-11, 205-pounder enters his senior season with nearly 10,000 yards rushing and broke Emmitt Smith's state record for career yards. It's a strong year in Florida at the position and Delray Beach (Fla.) back Greg Bryant has a chance to pass Taylor in the rankings with a big senior year. Bryant recently committed to Oklahoma but don't be surprised if his recruitment isn't over.
Hermitage (Richmond, Va.) tailback
Derrick Green is another player who uses his 4.4 speed to get around defenders. It looks like he'll head out-of-state at this point and has already visited Wisconsin, N.C. State and Clemson among others. Alabama commit Altee Tenpenny was injured all of last season but that didn't keep him out of the top 50 based on his sophomore year and an impressive showing during the spring and summer camp circuit. A chisled 5-foot-11, 200-pounds, the North Little Rock (Ark.) native is somebody that should be the next in line of successful Crimson Tide running backs.

Further down the list at No. 79 is another player headed to Tuscaloosa,
Walton (Marietta, Ga.) tailback
Tyren Jones. He can do a little bit of everything on the field and don't be surprised if coaches try to get him into space by flexing him out of the backfield or running some sweeps to help him get to the edge. Ohio State commit
Ezekiel Elliott is right behind Jones at No. 81 overall and a big all-purpose runner for the Buckeyes who can do just about everything at the position and a great fit for Urban Meyer's offense.
Further south in
St. Petersburg Catholic (Fla.) is No. 88 overall and running back
Ryan Green, who has narrowed his list at this time to Notre Dame and Florida. Right behind him as the final running back to make the top 100 is Virginia Beach (Va.) speedster
Taquan Mizzell.
With just four of the 10 running backs in the top 100 left uncommitted, this isn't a position that will see a ton of action on the recruiting trail but things are always in flux in the run up to Signing Day. A lot of programs will be interested in where Isaac lands and if he makes a decision before the summer is over there could be a run on the rest of the guys who haven't put on a school hat yet - and some that have too.
