East Sequoia recap Sept. 26, 2012
Strathmore was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fourth to second in East Sequoia. Earlier in the week, the Spartans triumphed over McFarland 56-22.
Strathmore moved up to 728 from 819 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 56-22 win over the Cougars helped Jeromy Blackwell's team improve its standing.
Cody Styles was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 18 carries, he ran for 286 yards as the Spartans bested Orosi. Ricardo Madrigal also contributed to the rushing game with 57 yards on the ground.
Ferreira was the best wideout in East Sequoia this week as the Tigers defeated the Cardinals. Ferreira tallied two receptions for 48 yards. Anthony Lopez helped Woodlake's passing attack out by catching one ball for 27 yards.
Kaleb Toone made the biggest impact on defense this week as Corcoran fell to Liberty. The 5-foot-8 junior grabbed one sack.
Nicholas Portillo put up the best numbers through the air as the Panthers lost to the Hawks. He finished with nine completions for 88 yards and one touchdown. Portillo's favorite target this week was AJ Torres, who caught three passes for 28 yards.
6-foot-1 quarterback Phil Woods of Woodlake is the league leader in passing yards this season with 324. He has also thrown two touchdowns. On the ground, Strathmore's Styles has rushed for 880 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Trent Myers. The Sierra Pacific star has 10 catches for 104 yards.
The Spartans took down McFarland 56-22 last week, the largest margin of any game. Styles caught two passes for 23 yards in the win.
