On Monday, the West Warwick Wizards faced the Cumberland Clippers in a battle between two of the state's top teams. West Warwick came out on top against Cumberland by a score of 46-37. The win was just what West Warwick needed coming off of a 60-39 defeat in their prior match.
West Warwick's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Liz Gresin, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and five assists. That's the first time this season that Gresin scored 15 or more points. Calla Davide was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Cumberland lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Bridgitt Van Etten, who scored 13 points along with six rebounds. That was a full 35.1% of Cumberland's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Allie Casavant, who scored nine points along with two steals.
West Warwick's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-4. As for Cumberland, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-4.
West Warwick will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against East Greenwich at 7:00 p.m. East Greenwich is coming into the game on a five-game losing streak. As for Cumberland, they will head out on the road to challenge Mt. Hope at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Rhode Island (Mt. Hope is ranked 31st, while Cumberland is ranked 20th).
