Softball Recap: Harker Heights Wins Going Away Against Bryan

Harker Heights won the last time they faced Bryan and things went their way on Tuesday too. The Harker Heights Knights were the clear victor by a 17-2 margin over the Bryan Vikings. Considering the Knights have won ten matchups by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Janelly Rios made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in February.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Alexis Newlin, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in runs. Leila Osuna also deserves some recognition as she launched her first home run of the season.

Harker Heights hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in seven consecutive games.

Harker Heights is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That somehow still isn't as good as their 16-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. Bryan's loss was their 12th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Harker Heights will venture away from home to challenge Copperas Cove at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Harker Heights' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so Copperas Cove's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Bryan, they are taking a road trip to take on Shoemaker at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Bryan has given up an average of 11.6 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
