The Cherokee Chiefs will head out to challenge the Hammonton Blue Devils at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Cherokee is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Cherokee came up short against Rancocas Valley on Tuesday, falling 9-3. The Chiefs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Kasey McNee made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2. That stolen base marked the first that she snagged this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Allison Cunane, who went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, Hammonton waltzed into their match on Tuesday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over the Minutemen. While the Blue Devils didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-19), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Gracie Ravenkamp made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Ravenkamp was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, Vivian Wilson was a standout: she scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances. Leah Alexander was another key player, scoring three runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Hammonton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .543. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Washington Township only posted an OBP of .286.
Hammonton pushed their record up to 8-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Cherokee, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-2.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Cherokee hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .342. However, it's not like Hammonton struggles in that department as they've averaged .331. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Cherokee skirted past Hammonton 4-2 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Do the Chiefs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Blue Devils turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
