Basketball Recap: Soulsville Triumphs

While Soulsville didn't have the best season last year (they finished 0-8), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They snuck past the University Tigers with a 77-73 victory on Tuesday.

Soulsville had a senior duo take command as JAKEEL TRUSS went 9 of 20 on his way to 26 points along with five rebounds and three steals and BRANDON TURNER went 8 for 18 en route to 20 points and three blocks. As a matter of fact, that's the most points TRUSS has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of NICHOLAS WILLIAMS JR, who posted six points in addition to three steals and three blocks.

University's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Anthony Brewer Jr., who put up 15 points and six assists, and LaTrevius Gant, who went 6 of 13 on his way to 16 points along with seven boards and three steals. Gant continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Ivory Allen was another key player, going 6 of 10 on his way to 12 points.

Soulsville's win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 7-2. As for University, they now have a losing record at 4-5.

Soulsville won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Kirby at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Soulsville is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 68.4 points per game this season. As for University, they will venture away from home to face off against City University School of Liberal Arts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The timing is sure in City University School of Liberal Arts' favor as the squad sits on three straight wins at home while University has been banged up by three consecutive losses on the road.
