Charlotte (Punta Gorda, Fla.) had a comfortable lead entering the fourth quarter, but used 14 fourth quarter points to seal the 51-27 victory over
East Lee County (Lehigh Acres, Fla.).
The Fightin' Tarpons were up 30-20 at the half after taking the lead on a
Clyde Newton touchdown run in the first quarter.
Charlotte expanded its lead to 17 points entering the fourth quarter. CHS scored once in the quarter on a
Brennan McGill touchdown pass to
Dwayne Reynolds.
The Punta Gorda school's standout player in the win was Newton. The senior ran for three touchdowns. He has now scored 20 touchdowns on the season.
The Jaguars'
Winfred Ward played well. The junior quarterback ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to eight on the year.
When the two teams played each other last season, the Fightin' Tarpons came away with a 48-6 victory.
The loss comes after East Lee County defeated Cape Coral 32-20 last week. The victory was a step in the right direction for Charlotte, which was coming off a 13-0 defeat at the hands of Port Charlotte in its previous game. The loss snapped East Lee County's 3-game winning streak.
