After two games on the road, Portales is heading back home. They will take on the Bernalillo Spartans at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
Two weeks ago, Portales faced Lovington in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Portales fell 29-21 to Lovington. Portales has struggled against Lovington recently, as their contest two weeks ago was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.
Meanwhile, Bernalillo had already proven themselves in the regular season, and didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They blew past Valencia 52-0 at home. The win made it back-to-back wins for Bernalillo.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Bernalillo to victory, but perhaps none more so than Uriel Castro, who threw for 91 yards and two touchdowns on only eight passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Another player making a difference was Mason Mcchriston, who picked up 54 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Lovington's win bumped their season record to 7-3 while Portales' loss dropped theirs to 9-1.
Everything came up roses for Portales against Bernalillo in their previous matchup back in October as the squad secured a 38-0 win. Will Portales repeat their success, or does Bernalillo have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
