Having just played yesterday, the Edgewood Academy Wildcats will jump right back in to play the Abbeville Christian Academy Generals at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Edgewood Academy had no problem doing just that on Thursday. They had just enough and edged the Colts out 49-46. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Edgewood Academy.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Edgewood Academy to victory, but perhaps none more so than Johnny Groves, who scored 13 points along with three steals and two blocks. It was the first time this season that Groves posted two or more blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Brody Whitt, who scored 11 points along with two steals and two blocks.
Meanwhile, Abbeville Christian Academy had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 28 points), and they went ahead and made it eight on Thursday. They walked away with a 72-65 win over Patrician Academy. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Abbeville Christian Academy got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jp Sowell out in front who almost dropped a double-double on 18 points and nine rebounds. Another player making a difference was Shi Crawford, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Edgewood Academy is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a massive bump to their 13-16 record this season. As for Abbeville Christian Academy, their win bumped their record up to 19-7.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Edgewood Academy have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 25.6 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Abbeville Christian Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 41 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Edgewood Academy and Abbeville Christian Academy were neck-and-neck in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, but Edgewood Academy came up empty-handed after a 57-56 defeat. Can Edgewood Academy avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
